Everyone knows the leaves turn color in the fall. It’s mostly white in winter. Everything’s green in summer. In spring.... there’s mud and black flies. While this is somewhat true, “8 Views / 4 Seasons”  will show you what an artist sees.

I selected eight locations and beginning a year ago, painted each one in each of the four seasons. They are not identical views - every time a location was painted I chose a composition and viewpoint that I felt was most meaningful for the conditions of that specific day. For some of the places, like Barnum Brook at the Paul Smith’s College VIC, I backpacked my paints, canvas and easel in to the painting spot. In winter, I skied - forgetting there would be a wet painting to carry out! While we all love the “Adirondack blue” skies of perfect summer days, I purposely chose to paint in a wide variety of weather conditions.

All the paintings have been done on canvas, using oil paints, in the tradition of “plein air” artists - working outdoors, on location. There might be a few dead black flies stuck in the paint of the spring paintings. Some of the winter ones have more hasty brushwork as I worked rapidly before toes and fingers got too numb! But they all are a visual record of the my experiences and the passage of time at each specific place.

10% of the sales from this show will be donated to the Adirondack Mountain Club Trails Program, to help with some of the extensive trailwork that needs to be done after the damaging rains of Hurricane Irene.
